I was able to create a sequence model for the fields interviews and contextual interview. I manage to develop a flow model from all the data I collected individually, and I mad a cutural model dealing with the differences in years at UCSD and visitors. We were all able to share our individual models and will be able to combined them next time we meet.

Tuesday 5/22

As a group we decided to organize all of our individual data into Excell documents. We thought this would be easier for a small group and aide in the organization of our affinity diagram. I did this for all of my interviews so I could easily see the overlap in problems.

Wednesday 5/23

I went back to Muir to take pictures of the buildings in the Stuart Commons. I took many pictures from different angles and decided that the ones the included the building names in the pictures would probably be the best to use for our prototype. However, I ran across a problem when I realized I misplaced my import cable and could not download my pictures onto my computer. I will have to ge a new one from the bookstore.

Thursday 5/24

I put all my data for the Stuart Commons, minus the pictures, into a rough outline for each building. The idea is that for our paper prototype, this information would show up when you clicked on a building. My outline included a picture (well will include a picture), a brief description of the facilities in each building, the hours of operation, a general description of the location of the building, and amenities included (such as computers, bathrooms, or WiFi access).

For our next meeting we need to get our prototype together so we can test is a little (possibly two different prototypes), and start putting our group binder together so we have all our information in one place when it comes to writing the paper.

Commentary

Sunday May 27, 2007
Commentary

I was out of town all this weekend and had no access to internet until now.

This past week, I have finished consolidating an analyzing the consolidated work models, interface models, sequence models, and artifact models. I have make an effort to transfer all of my physical data into an excel document, except for the models. I have written out mini description of buidlings. (AP & M, Mc Gill, Mandlker, and biology. I have collected some of the materials for our paper prototype, such as images, floor plans, etc. I have started on formatting our presentation, because I have been less than impressed on our previous presentations as well as the overall class presentation. Class on Tuesday provided me with a lot of good ideas for a crisper and cleaner Power-point presentation. I want to hopefully build and test our paper prototype within the week. I still need to collect some information and materials for the prototype.

Nick's Commentary Week 8

Nicholas Pojman
A05808932

Monday:
Group meeting. We met up and discussed our different models. We each developed sequence models and some had artifact models. We are going to consolidate these in our next meeting and hopefully come up with some good ideas.

Tues:
Went back to my bulidings in muir to do more in depth research. Here are the building summaries I built. These will be comined with pictures and will be part of our paper prototype in conjunction with a map of Muir.

Main Gym
(Insert PIC HERE)

Main Gym Hours:

Monday-Friday: 7:00am-11:00pm
Sat: 7:30am-11:00pm
Sun: 9:30am-11:00pm
Specific Hour information can be found at:
http://recreation.ucsd.edu/main/facil.html

Recreation facility open to all UCSD students and employees. I will use this info and combine it with Ken's HSS info.

Thursday:
Went back to muir and took better pics of inside/outsides of buildings. Also got some additional hours information that I couldn't find my first time. These building summaries will be compiled with other group members. I also input all the data from our paper survies, and but my interview information into an excel document so that we have them all in the same place. All this data will be the basis for our presentation as well as our paper.

TO DO THIS WEEK

FINISH PAPER PROTOTYPE
TEST.TEST.TEST. I had a mandatory event that i had to go to. I was wondering if we could meet this weekend? Anyway here's the data I've collected thus far.

Visitor Interview:
3rd Year. Male UCLA Student. Has no experience with the maps.ucsd.edu site.

I'll go into details later, but the main points were that
1) He wanted a larger map (on the screen) so that when you zoom in you can still see the location relative to the rest of the campus (as opposed to just beeing able to see the building)
2) He really didn't like the search results and complained that they were too arbitrary (some results were not relevant to the search etc)

Anyway here's how the interview went down:

I asked him to find each of the 6 admin buildings for the colleges and study lounges for the colleges using whatever means available to him on the computer (i didn't leave maps.ucsd.edu for him open)

He used google (because "it's the easiest way to search for things") and typed in "UCSD Maps"
the first link was to maps.ucsd.edu and he got there from it.

Instead of searching for the admin sites, he clicked on the buildings link which then gave a wide range of buildings. He clicked his way to Revelle Admin building. It showed the visitor's map.
-He spent a lot of time looking at the map and didn't realize that the yellow highlighted building was a representation of where the location was. He eventually figured it out and commented that "the name of the building is blocked out by the yellow dot."
-He wasn't very comfortable getting to the location. He said that he would need to be in the general area first before being able to begin finding it.

Next he clicked on Marshall Admin building.
He said he wasn't that comfortable getting to the location (similar to the revelle one). I asked him what would give him a better mental representation of the location. He said that
1) "if they made the frame (of the map) bigger it would be better because you get a better perspective"
2) "The map seems too compact. It makes it hard because UCSD is a very large campus."

He went to the building index again and tried to find the ERC admin building, but couldn't. He then clicked on the visitors link and still couldn't find it. Next he tried searching for "roosevelt admin" and finally got the yellow dot to show up (he found he location.)

I asked him how he felt about parking there, and and first he said that he wouldn't be comfortable parking near it, but then he noticed the parking map and clicked on it and said he wouldn't have a hard time afterall. He mentioned that it would be better if the main roads were easier to see so that it's easier to drive there.

Now in finding the 6th college admin building he had the most trouble. Building index lead to nothing. Clicked on departments and looked around still nothing. he then went to google and ended up on tritonlink. He said that if he got to the 6th college main website, he'd probably be able to find the admin building. The link he found under the 6th college site in "About Us" lead him back to the maps.ucsd.edu map (this time with a yellow dot indicating where the location is).

He was confused at this point because the building highlighted didn't have a name. He said that he would have to assume that this was the admin building since it was the building under "About Us". He said that he'd call the building and confirm because the map didn't help him out enough in finding the location.

For the Muir admin building, he did the same thing as with the 6th, he went to the Muir main site. This time, the link lead him to maps.ucsd.edu as well, but a huge chunk of John muir college was highlighted. He said that he had no idea where the admin building was and would just go to the general area and ask around from there.

The guy i interviewed had no qualms with the visual aspect of the map because it has "visitor, parking, and simple" maps, which he thought was helpful.

This guy had a very difficult time finding any study lounges. He wanted to stop (due to frustration) but i urged him to keep going as if he absolutely needed to find the location.

He searched for "Marshall Stduy hall" in the search results and many search results appeared, none being a study lounge of any sort. He then went to google and looked for "Muir college study hall". He clicked on the John Muir site and commented that he'd have to say the study halls were in tioga and tenaya, because otherwise he'd have no idea where it was. (The information on the Muir site indicated that you could study there). He didn't know that Tioga and Tenaya were residential areas.

The rest of the colleges held the same results. He couldn't really find any of them and became rather frustrated. My part of the presentation was to discuss our field interviews and go over a specific example of one I did. I then went to my sorority meeting at 7:30 and passed out about 25 more surveys.

Tuesday 5/15

We had our presentation in class and realized we needed to really get working on our models.

Wednesday 5/16

I walked around the Stuard Commons to gather data for our prototype. I collected hours, locations, what facilities were porvided, and what (if anything) was sold in each place. I was able to gather this information for Sierra Summit, MOM, El Mercado, and the skate shop.

Thursday 5/17

I went back to Muir to gather a more detailed map of the Stuart Commons including bathrooms, mail boxes (drop off and pick up), number of seats available in the dinig halls and study lounges, ect.

Saturday 5/19

I collected all the waivers from my previous interview subjects, which I had previously forgotten. We have split up all the buildings in Muir so that we can each focus on certain ones. Our data presentation will cover briefly some of the main problems we found from our interiews, field interviews, and paper surveys. The group broke up presentation topics. We dicussed our needs for more younger student interviews as well as our desperate need for visitors. As a student in SD, not from the area, it s difficult to me to find people outside of school who have never been to the campus, yet are on willing to do an in depth, and slightly boring interview. I think I will be interviewing one of my coworkers, who isn't a UCSD student but has been to campus a couple time, as we work off campus through UCSD. We are trying to make our data as broad as possible, so visitor data is essential to the project. Visitors are some of the most common users of the UCSD maps site, as they have no preexisting knowledge with which to help their navigation of the site.

Tuesday
Gave our data presentation, and handed out several paper surveys. Entered Ken's survey results into an excel document. Our dat a has been very useful in giving us insight into what the primary use for the majority of students is. While the data is not in depth, it is easy for us to accumulate a large quantity of it.

Wednesday
Walked through Muir, took some notes and pictures. I looked at Main gym, natatorium, and ledden auditorium. My notes will be used for our prototypes, combined with our group's notes.

Thursday
Went to class.

Friday
Sungod. Our group decided to collect more data focusing on first time users to the website as well as non affliated ucsd people. I have conducted a couple of good interviews and will hopefully interpret them on our next group meeting session. I have started modeling much of the data. this next week I would like to really consolidate our collection of data/models into an concrete afffinity model so that we can start prototyping. It was a mid-level interview that lasted roughly 10 minutes. I asked him to find 3 buildings (WLH 2204, UC 611, and the nanatorium) using the maps.ucsd.edu site. Upon finding each building using the site, i asked him the range in difficulty (scale from 1-5) on how comfortable he would be in walking to the location, driving there, and finding parking there. He commented that for WLH and the nanatorium, he could easily walk there because he had already visited those locations, but that if he were a visitor, the satellite image that the maps site gave would not have helped very much. Even as a 2nd year, he did not know where UC 611 was and was uncomfortable with his ability to find the location given the data from the map.

Wednesday 5/9

Group meeting with Nick and Ken. We talked about the interviews we had done and started discussing reoccuring themes briefly. Nick and Ken had already conducted contextual interviews so we spent most of the time discussing those.

Friday 5/11

Conducted a contextual interview with a 4th year, male Warren transfer student with zero experience living on campus. I asked him to find the administration buildings and study lounges for each of the six colleges, and studied the ways in which he went about doing so. One thing i noticed was that he entered in "admin buildings" into the ucsd maps site and an overwhelming amount of search results appeared, and he looked frustrated as he had to scroll through a laundry list of buildings to find the six that he wanted. He said that he felt comfortable finding the six administration buildings. Upon viewing the map, one thing i noticed was that he would zoom in a few times and look around for landmarks and reference points. At one point he said out loud "oh that looks like muir parking lot". I asked him about it and he explained that if he was a first time visitor it would have been difficult to find the locations of the building, and suggested that if there were directions with the map things would be easier. Furthermore, he claimed that things would be easier if the names of the buildings were there instead of the satellite image. One interesting thing is that he did not notice the three options for different maps (visitor, parking, simple). I pointed this out to him and he commented that he didn't realize those were there. Upon looking for the study halls, he entered in "study hall" into the search box and many search results appeared. Some were even irrelevant, such as "Marshall College". He seemed frustrated as he pressed the back button and entered in "study hall college" into the search box. Again, there were many irrelevant search results. By this time about 20 minutes had passed and he didn’t seem like he wanted to continue looking. He said with a sigh, “Ah forget it, I give up”. He complained about the searching mechanism and how the search returns were too broad.

Sunday 5/13

Met up with Nick, Ken, and Chrissy and talked about our interviews again. Ken mentioned that I should have forced the person I interviewed to find those study halls, as the data from that would have been valuable, but I think that the fact that a 4th year student (although this is only his 2nd year here) giving up on finding a location is valuable data in and of itself regarding the effectiveness of the site. Talked about goals for next week and split up responsibilities.

Goals for Next Week:

Conduct another contextual interview with a friend of mine (visitor) who is coming down for SunGod. Get a few surveys filled out. Fulfill my responsibility of finding out information about the resident houses in John Muir College. (tioga, tenaya, the apartments). The structure our group came up with for interviews is to have brief surveys, medium length interviews, and longer, more in depth interviews. The goal of the surveys is to collect a lot of data from a wide variety of people. The goal of the medium length interviews is to have a handful of people to use the website and observe them trying to do simple tasks. The indepth, lengthy interviews will be done with the fewest amount of people, but we hope to get the most user data from them.
Over this last week I did four medium length interviews and passed out and analyzed about 25 surveys. In the interviews I observed 4 different people navigate the UCSD maps website doing the same tasks. The tasks included finding an easy location, a location of medium difficulty, and a location of hard difficulty. The locations we pick were Warren Lecture Hall 2204, the Natatorium, and UC 611. I made sure not to give them much direction so to observe how each person would go about finding these locations. I told them to use any means they wanted to try and find them. Watching them navigate the site was followed by a series of follow up questions including what they liked and didn't like about the site, what they thought was easy, what improvements they would suggest, and how comfortable they would be actually finding these locations.
Much of the data I collected was what was expected. My groups had previously aanalyzed the site and knew the porblems we saw and improvements we thought we'd like to make. However, I wanted to make sure that this process would be completely consumer driven, so I was able to allow my interviewee run the interview. I interviewed four UCSD students, all fourth years. Two were Muir students and have just lived on campus their first year. One was an ERC student who had lived on campus for two years, and one was a Marshall student who had lived on campus two years as well. A conclusion I found interesting was that all four seemed to think the sight was easy to navigate, but it just did not include enough information. All of the interviewees thought that they would be able to find these locations by walking or driving it would just probably take a while to find. Most agreed that the parking map was the best map to use despite its lack of a color code key. Ironically, everyone thought the visitor's map was the worse and conveyed the least amount of information. A major suggestion was to color code the biuldings by what type of buiding it was, ie. a lecture hall, living quarters, dining, ect. A second major complaint was the scrolling and zooming functions are very primitive.
The major theme from the surveys, I found was how many people actually use the website and how often. As a group we hope to get enough survey information to come up with accurate statistics that represent the UCSD population as a whole. It turns out, to my surprise that the majority of UCSD students have used the maps website on more than one occassion. The most common used is on a quarterly basis to find their classes. This only came as a surprise to me because before this project I had not used the maps website. As a fourth year, I always called Edna for help with finding classes.
During our interpretation sessions, my group was able to come up with some good ideas aabout where the users would like us to take the maps website. Some ideas being tossed around are making sure the user has a reference point and possibly making it possible for students to edit their own map online so that their class routes are highlighted and important locations for each student are marked. Another idea we may like to incorporated is different detailed maps depending on what the needs of the user are. For example, the website could contain a map for driving directions where the roads are in great detail and the building are not in as much detail.
The goals for next week are to pass out about 25 more surveys and review the data. I would also like to finish up two more medium length interviews as well as two long interviews. I hope I will be able to do at least one indepth interview with a visitor, and I would like to conduct medium length interviews on a wider variety of students, such as first and second years. As a group we hope to continue our interpretation sessions and create models next week. Tomorrow I will be preparing slides for our presentation to the class on our progress. If we can accomplish all of this than we will be on schedule.

Building split up

Anthony:
Tioga hall
Tenaya hall
Tuolone apts.

Chrissy:
Stuart commons
(el mercado, muir surf, summit, etc............)

Ken:

Mandler hall
McGil Hall
AP & M à X
HSS
Biology à X

Nick:

Natatorium
Main gym
Rec. gym
Ledden Auditorium

Nick's Commentary Week 06

Nicholas Pojman
A05808932

Monday 5/7
Re-Emailed Valdmir Orlic, site owner for maps.ucsd.edu, asking for some time of response to my series of emails. I proposed meeting in person so that we could dicuss some of the logistics of the sites, and also try to establis some sort of relationship. Hopefully, if he is wiling, and responds to my email, we will be able to implement the Google analyst program. The google anayltics program has over 80 different reports on user interaction with a site. Passed out paper surveys in one of my discussions. Received 19 more paper surveys.

Tuesday 5/8
Conducted contextual interview with female, 3rd, Sixth college student who had 2 years experience living on campus. here are some of the notes I took from:

- [ ] Sixth
- [ ] Sixth Academic Advising (3 minutes)
- [ ] uses search engine
- [ ] search comes up with
- [ ] re serach- Sixth college academic advising
- [ ] Can't find it
- [ ]
- [ ] goes to ucsd.edu
- [ ] searches sixth college academic advising
- [ ] finds on triton link 2nd floor on
- [ ] tritonlink has link to map
- [ ]
- [ ] Clics (15 seconds)
- [ ] search engine
- [ ] highlights clics
- [ ]
- [ ] TMC academic advising (5 minutes)
- [ ] searches "academic advising", selecting to search Thurgood
marshall
- [ ] then uses search engine
- [ ] but it comes up with ALL academic advising locations
- [ ] ucsd.edu
- [ ] searches TMC academci advising
- [ ] linked to provost.ucsd.edu/marshall
- [ ] still can't find
- [ ] inconclusive
- [ ] mamp ink from tritionlink.
- [ ] use existing landmarks
- [ ] mapquest directions
- [ ] main roads
- [ ] nataorium
- [ ] can't read street names
- [ ] can't read building names
- [ ] starting location
- [ ] getting in perspective
- [ ] what does
- [ ] searches aren't narrow enough
- [ ] worst were academic advising
- [ ] lists reasons why to go to academic advising but location is
difficult to find
- [ ] maps doesn't bring up same info that searching ucsd.edu does
- [ ] bigger map in one direction
- [ ] too ambiguous
- [ ] relied a lot on exisiting knowledge as reference
- [ ] description of building

Academic advising offices for each college were impossible to find on maps.ucsd.edu. Subject resorted to using ucsd.edu google search llinking them to tritonlink.ucsd.edu, and then sending them back to maps.ucsd.edu. Obviously this type of loop is an indication of poor design.

Wednesday 5/9
Group meeting. Ken, Anthony, and I discussed Ken and Mine's contextual interview. Ken's was particularily revealing because it gave us a lot of insight into someone who is constantly traveling to many of the builidings throughout campus. Ken and I dicussed making a type of personizable map, one that both employees and students could customize to fit their needs. Further contextual interviews will help us see whether or not this is something worth implementing.

Friday- left for Oakland to see mom for mothers day

Sunday 5/12

Group meeting
Agenda:
Discuss contextual interviews, start to consolidate data and collect models.

Goals for next week:

Conduct one more contextual interview
Consolidate work models from each member's contexual interview
Present data to class
Investigate Gym, natatorium, and rec gym. building layout and strucutre for muir maps prototype. Hopefully obtain some tangible copy of floor plan for implementation into paper prototype.
Conduct more paper surveys.

Weekly Commentary

Kenneth Yu
